PUPILS as young as four are being excluded from Peterborough primary schools for abusing their teachers and classmates, alarming new figures have revealed.
A total of 43 fixed period exclusions have been made on children aged between four and eight at city schools in the past three years - between September 2006 and August 2009.

Pupils were excluded for physically and verbally abusing adults, other pupils and, in one instance between September 2007 and August 2008, a pupil was permanently expelled for physically abusing a teacher.

She said tactics such as bringing in mentors, pastoral support plans, holding pupil at risk panels and sending children to seclusion units are all used before pupils are permanently barred.

There are three seclusion units across the city, where pupils are sent to cool down and do work following an incident of bad behaviour. Another successful initiative is the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning agenda, which creates the best atmosphere for a pupil's learning, reducing disruptive behaviour.
