ORANGE – A music teacher at El Modena High School was charged today with sexual misconduct with a male student.
Carlie Rose Attebury, 29, who was the school's band director, is charged with eight felony counts: two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and six other counts, including dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
Attebury was arrested Oct. 13 and released Oct. 14 after posting $50,000 bond.
According to an Oct. 13 e-mail to city officials from the Orange Police Department, the student admitted to having "sexual encounters with a teacher."
Leading up to today, she had been on paid leave. But today, the Orange Unified School District changed Attebury's status to unpaid leave, according to a district official.
Deputy District Attorney Susan Kang Schroeder said the charges stemmed from two encounters with one student. The first encounter is alleged to have occurred in February and the second in April, according to the district attorney's Web site.
"So far, we have one John Doe who was somewhere between the age of 15 to 16 at the time of the incidents," Schroeder said. "(Attebury) should be turning herself in. But I'm not sure if we're attempting to serve her yet."
