FL: Restrained Student Suffers Broken Arm

Special Note: If this had happened anywhere else besides a public school - if the PARENT had broken this child's arm, would the outcome have been the same?

The Saint Lucie County sheriff's office has dismissed any possible charges.

Pam Redding, the student's mother, says a school employee restrained her son Devontae and broke his arm.

It happened at Dale Cassens School in Fort Pierce, a school for the emotionally, mentally, or physically disabled. The school employs "specialists" that are trained to handle conflict by restraining upset students.

Pam Redding signed a release to allow restraint, but says she did not expect violence. Her 13-year-old son Devontee says the specialist pulled his arm back until it made a popping noise. When they finally let him up he asked twice to go to the nurse's office, but they wouldn't allow him to leave his desk.

At first the district wouldn't go into the specifics of this case, but now they claim it was an accident and say Devontae kicked school employees.

The district will not take any action against staff members.
