TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is supporting an investigation into what lies beneath graves at a state reform school where children were abused in the 1950s and '60s.
A group of men who were abused at the school have asked state and federal authorities to investigate the graves, marked only by white iron crosses. Crist said Monday he supports an investigation.
The men believe the graves contain the bodies of boys killed at the reform school.
No one has ever been prosecuted for the beatings at the school. Just two months ago, the Department of Juvenile Justice acknowledged that the abuse took place.
Boys would be hit dozens of times for offenses as slight as singing, or talking to a black inmate.
