Detroit (WWJ) -- Democratic State Senator Hansen Clarke is calling for an overhaul of the Detroit Public School district.
Clarke told WWJ that he's proposing reforms for the entire district, and special reforms for schools failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act for five consecutive years.
Among the changes, he's calling for a year-round school year and longer school days to better prepare students for the future. "We've got to get geared up for this new economy," Clarke said.
He wants curriculum reforms too, with the conversion of failing schools into small, student-centered schools based on the model of University Preparatory Academy in Detroit.
Clarke wants to see his plan move forward in the fall of 2009.
